Girls Boarding Schools

Aspen Education Group has boarding schools for girls in North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, and Arizona.

We understand the unique learning style of girls. Our schools provide greater leadership opportunities, are more relevant to girls' academic and social needs, and provide more encouragement in the areas of science, math and technology than coed schools.

Determining Your Teen’s Curfew

Working with your sons and/or daughters to establish an effective curfew can go a long way toward keeping them healthy, safe, and focused on their responsibilities. A successful curfew not only gets your children home on time, but keeps a daily conversation going to let you know what their plans are and where they go when plans change. Staying out late exacerbates typical teen issues with maintaining a healthy sleep schedule, which is the foundation for achievement in school and meeting other responsibilities. Being on the street or in unsupervised locations late at night often exposes teens to drug and alcohol abuse, as well as dangerous and criminal behavior. Making sure that they are not there in the first place can nip these problems in the bud.

It’s important not to think of a curfew as a blanket solution; if you look at it as a cure-all you will likely end up with more of a band-aid solution. Teen crime and drug use is often highest in the hours after school, before parents get home, or when teens have the least supervision. So, a curfew is simply a tool to maximize supervision, safety, and sleep, late at night.

New Year's Resolutions

Did you and your family make any resolutions this year? The beginning of a new year is a great time to stop and take stock of where your family is and where you’re headed. If you see areas for improvement, take steps now to make positive changes.

Like setting goals, resolutions should be challenging yet achievable. Remember to make them attainable and definable. Look past the usual resolutions to lose weight, get more exercise, and pay off the credit cards. Some of the best resolutions to become a more effective parent and strengthen the relationships within your family include:

  • Be a good role model
  • Be consistent with your discipline
  • Communicate effectively: Avoid nagging, yelling and constantly reminding children to cooperate
  • Focus on your child’s positive behaviors and encourage children persistently
  • Listen more and make sure you understand everything about your children
  • Look at situations from your child’s perspective and not just your own
  • Encourage your children to solve their own problems
  • Take stock in your family’s values

Scientists Link Autism to Brain’s “Fear Center”

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin have discovered that a region of the brain is smaller in autistic boys. The differences could explain why autistic people have trouble developing social skills and “reading” other people’s faces for emotions.

The amygdala is the size of an almond and known as the brain’s “fear center.” Its function seems to be to organize memories around emotions.
