Valentines and Cupids, Not Just Birds and the Bees
It’s Valentine’s Day, the red-letter day for love and romance. In your teen’s world of hip hop, hook-ups and ‘ho’s, is there still room for Romeo and Juliet? For big mushy Valentine cards with lace?
The answer is yes. Not only do teenagers want to find true love and romance, they want parents and “sex educators” to talk about. They want to learn “How do I know when I’m really in love?” not how to name body parts. They want to know “How can I make love last a lifetime?” not how to avoid STDs.
As a parent of a teen, your job is to teach your child about sex, love and intimacy. Your teen looks to you for information and direction even though she may not act that way.
A wise man once said, “It’s not the words, it’s the music.” Likewise, there are two parts to teaching sex and intimacy. One is the mechanical, the other is the emotional and spiritual. It’s not just physical intimacy, it’s the emotional situation that surrounds it. As a parent, you have to teach both the words and music of love.

SUWS - 25 Years of Successfully Helping Families
SUWS wilderness programs specialize in providing a safe and therapeutic environment that allows troubled and defiant teens to identify and work through emotional obstacles. These obstacles have kept inherently good children from responding to parental efforts, schools, and treatment in the past. Combing the wilderness environment with experiential learning helps students learn to value themselves, access their own abilities and build upon their strengths.
Since 1981, SUWS has been giving children and their families hope for a positive and productive future.
The success of SUWS has been measured in many ways, including an independent study that found the participation in outdoor behavioral healthcare resulted in clinically significant reductions in the severity of behavioral and emotional symptoms.

Teen Suicide Rate Increases 18%, May Be Due To Drug Warning Labels
Teen suicide is increasing dramatically, according to a Center for Disease and Prevention survey that was recently published in Pediatrics.
CDC’s latest published survey kept track of suicides among young people ages 1 to 19 years old between the years 2003 to 2004. There was an increase of 18.2% in the rate of suicide, mostly among older teens.
Many experts believe the increase is due to warning labels on anti-depressant drugs. These labels caution against their use by young people.
"I have no doubt that there is such a relationship," said Dr. Charles Nemeroff, chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Emory University School of Medicine. "The concerns about antidepressant use in children and adolescents has paradoxically resulted in a reduction in their use, and this has contributed to increased suicide rates."
