September is Addiction Recovery Month
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the United States has, for 17 years running, named September as National Recovery Month. The purpose behind National Recovery Month is to raise awareness regarding addiction and to promote benefits of substance abuse treatment.
We acknowledge National Recovery Month with articles on teen addiction.
The Impact of Trauma On Teenage Addiction
Not so long ago, addiction was considered a moral failure on the part of individuals. More recently, addiction has been considered a disease. Current thinking, however, is that addiction is a result of brain dysfunction. In many cases, the dysfunction stems from experiencing trauma, especially childhood trauma.
Traumas in childhood often create a predilection to addictions later in life. Trauma could be sexual abuse, physical abuse, long-term neglect, car accidents, divorce of parents, death of parents, being connected to an event such as a house fire, flood, or tornado, and more. It’s now known that trauma is not merely a bad memory to “get over.” Trauma causes changes in the brain and body, impacts emotions and behaviors, and can lead to addiction.

Teen addictions and Other Mental Health Issues
Teen addiction seldom comes from a single cause. Parents, teachers, and other caring adults often look to issues such as peer pressure or poor self esteem as underlying causes. However, other co-moribund diagnoses are very predictive for potential drug or chemical abuse, and need to be considered as part of any addiction and dependency treatment.
In the past, adolescent, teen, and young adult addictions focused on eliminating the drug or chemical use and dependency. However, nearly all teen addictions have various mental health issues underlying the addiction that needs to be treated.
